E-Cigarette Study: Vaping Could Save Smokers’ Lives

Recent research suggests vaping instead of smoking can add years to the lives of more than 6 million smokers. Other experts say e-cigarettes aren’t good for health.

Using mathematical models, researchers calculated how 2 possible scenarios of cigarette and e-cigarette use could affect public health if Americans who smoked cigarettes started to use e-cigarettes over the next 10 years. One was an “optimistic” scenario and the other one – “pessimistic.”

Switching to E-Cigarettes

Smokers who choose to switch to e-cigarettes from traditional cigarettes could reduce deaths caused by tobacco use. This is according to the abovementioned analysis that evaluates the role of nicotine alternatives.

The study was led by Dr. David Levy of Georgetown University Medical Center, and the findings have recently been published in the peer-review journal Tobacco Control.

The results of the study show that switching to vaping products would lead to 6.6 million fewer premature deaths, with a combined 86.7 million fewer years lost. The above-mentioned “pessimistic scenario,” with smoking rates and interventions continuing as they are, suggests deaths will be reduced by 1.6 million and there will be 20.8 million fewer life years lost.

Choosing Vaping Products. Electronic Cigarette Merchant Accounts.

Electronic cigarette businesses are classified as high risk. Merchants in the e-cig industry are well aware that opening an electronic cigarette merchant account for credit card processing won’t be easy for them.

That’s why it’s critical for merchants running an e-cig business to look for a reputable payment processor specializing in the high risk sector that will help them easily get approved for high risk credit card processing. For respectable high risk merchant account providers, e-cig merchant accounts aren’t a problem at all.

The researchers of the mentioned study say that the harms caused by cigarette smoking are still unacceptably high, though smoking has become less prevalent in the US over the last 50 years.

According to Marita Hefler, a public health researcher at Menzies School of Health Research in Australia, the results of the new study reveal that, even in a “pessimistic scenario,” if cigarettes are rapidly phased out, this could result in significant public health gains.
